Project Overview

When Casella Waste Systems reached out regarding their training room in Rutland, Vermont, they were facing a common—but costly—acoustic challenge. Their 34' x 31' x 10.5' (average height) training space had an estimated reverberation time (RT60) of approximately 4.2 seconds. While the room already contained some acoustic panels, the space remained highly reflective and disruptive to learning.

Their goal was clear: Reduce reverberation time to approximately 1.0 second, creating a comfortable, professional training environment that supports clear communication, improved focus, and a better overall employee experience.

DDS Acoustical Specialties was brought in to evaluate the room, engineer a solution, collaborate on aesthetics, and implement the installation with minimal operational disruption.

The Challenge: Excessive Reverberation in a Training Environment

The training room’s dimensions created a volume of roughly: 34’ × 31’ × 10.5’ = ~11,067 cubic feet

With hard surfaces throughout—drywall, tile flooring, and limited absorption—the space behaved acoustically like a reflective box. Even though Casella had previously installed some acoustic panels, the quantity and placement were insufficient to meaningfully reduce RT60.

Why 4.2 Seconds Is a Problem

An RT60 of 4.2 seconds means that when someone speaks, the sound energy lingers in the room for over four seconds before decaying by 60dB. In a training environment, that creates:

  • Overlapping speech reflections
  • Reduced speech intelligibility
  • Listener fatigue

  • Increased background noise buildup

For comparison:

  • Recommended RT60 for classrooms and training spaces: 0.6–1.0 seconds

In practical terms, instructors may feel like they’re “talking into a cave,” and participants struggle to clearly distinguish words—especially consonants, which carry critical speech clarity.

Using the Sabine equation, we calculated the room’s existing absorption and determined how many additional sabins were required to reach the 1-second RT60 target.

Because the room already contained some panels, we evaluated:

  • Existing panel quantity

  • Distribution across reflective surfaces
  • Remaining untreated surface area

The key takeaway:
The space required a significant increase in distributed broadband absorption, particularly across upper wall areas and portions of the ceiling.

The Solution: 400 Square Feet of Additional 2" Fabric-Wrapped Acoustic Panels

To achieve the target reverberation time, we added:

400 square feet of 2" thick fabric-wrapped acoustic panels

These panels were strategically placed across:

  • Upper wall surfaces
  • Ceiling areas
  • Previously reflective zones
  • A slatwall area that Casella disliked aesthetically

Why 2" Panels?

2" thick panels provide strong broadband absorption, particularly in the mid and high frequencies that dominate speech. While thicker panels can address lower frequencies, the primary acoustic issue in this room was speech clarity—not music production or bass management.

This made 2" absorptive treatment the ideal balance of:

  • Performance
  • Cost efficiency
  • Aesthetic flexibility
  • Minimal projection into the room

Addressing the Slatwall Aesthetic Concern

One unique element of this project was an existing slatwall feature that Casella felt was distracting in the room.

Rather than treating around it, we proposed integrating the acoustic solution directly over it, achieving two goals simultaneously:

  1. Improving acoustical performance
  2. Refining the room’s visual identity

By covering the slatwall with 1/2" Thick fabric-wrapped panels, the space transitioned from a mixed-material, reflective aesthetic to a cohesive, professional environment aligned with Casella’s needs.

This dual-function solution exemplifies how acoustics and aesthetics can work together rather than compete.

Collaborative Design Process

One of the most important aspects of this project was our close collaboration with the Casella team.

We worked together to determine:

  • Panel layout
  • Wall vs. ceiling distribution
  • Fabric colors
  • Integration with existing finishes

Because training schedules are often tightly managed, timing was critical. We coordinated carefully to ensure installation would not interfere with productivity.

Our experienced installation crew completed the full 400-square-foot installation in just one day.

While the initial RT60 was estimated at 4.2 seconds, the added absorption brought the space much closer to the 1.0-second target—representing a dramatic improvement in acoustic performance.

Subjectively, the difference was immediately noticeable:

  • Voices sounded tighter and clearer
  • Echo was greatly reduced
